Izložba REZ problematizuje uticaj naglih i gotovo nasilnih promena u tkivu grada.

Solo exhibition INCISION

Belgrade House of Youth Gallery

17-29. May 2011.

The exhibition INCISION focuses on the impact of the abrupt and almost violent changes in the urban tissue.

The exhibition was brought about by the fact that the King Aleksandar Boulevard (ex Boulevard of Revolution, but commonly known as simply The Boulevard) in Belgrade from 26 March till mid-March 2010 was stripped out of more than four hundred plane trees most of which were over fifty years old. The official excuse was the reconstruction of The Boulevard and the controversial claims that all of the plane trees were rotten. Majority of the trees were over a meter in diameter, which were almost one hundred years old trees, but there were also very young trees planted only few years before.

With this exhibition I question myself and the exhibition audience how much is such a massive tree-cut a vast change for the life in the city, its microclimate, architectural organization and design of the city and the urban memory? How much is the removal of the trees justified with the renovation of the street and its infrastructure, which was the official excuse of the city administration for such an act?

The plane trees cut was a direct cause to think about the ways the urban tissue is being treated, the urban memory, fact and emotional heritage of Belgrade in times of discontinuity. What are the ways of speaking about the preservance of the city ambiance and its renewal, regeneration and modernization? At which point does the gesture of renewal become own grotesque? I believe something far bigger and deeper was torn out along with the trees: the city environment received a strong blow, a deep incision in its core, in the memory of the city, there where’s what makes it a city in the first place.

Just before the beginning and during the action of the plane trees cutting I recorded over three thousand photographs, only few of which had been exhibited in the Belgrade House of Youth Gallery, due to the spatial limitations. Along with the photographs the exhibition presented the documentation on The Boulevard as a habitus inhabited for thousands of years – since before the Romans – and which has its life, habits and tradition. The third part of the exhibition was a process of public collection of stories related to the Boulevard itself.

On the occasion of the exhibition INCISION you are kindly invited to tell or send me a story about the street, people or events that took place in the Kralj Aleksandar Boulevard in Belgrade and/or show me old or new photographs taken on the Boulevard.
